ADO NEWSLINE – Jul/Aug 2009

WHAT IS THE WORLD CUP?

The ADO has invited all WDF member countries to participate in WDF World Cup XVII, Womens World Cup XIV, and Youth World Cup VI, September 23-26, 2009 at the Blake Hotel in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Fantastic!

So, …I’m a member of the ADO through my league……just what is this World Cup?

Well..the World Cup is an Olympic-type event.  The World Darts Federation operates as the Olympic Committee which directs the competition, dictates the rules and tallies the results.  The ADO and the City Of Charlotte, North Carolina are the hosts for 2009.
The Blake Hotel, the official venue, could be compared to the Olympic village as ADO has reserved the entire hotel for the 4 days. The international contests will be held there, the teams will sleep, eat, drink and swim there, and socialize daily in those surroundings. But there is one great big difference. The Olympic village is home to the athletes only – spectators are not allowed. The Blake Hotel, on the other hand, will be the optimal location to meet and intermingle with the dart teams and their entourages from all over the world. Indeed, it would be difficult to stay in the same venue and not bump into someone!

The event formats are familiar if you have ever been to a darts tournament, with the Men fighting for Singles, Doubles and Team titles; the Women battling for Singles & Doubles titles and the Youth contesting Singles and Mixed Pairs. Chalkers are always needed…….and you can chalk..right?! What a prime seat to watch world class darts! Chalkers will receive ‘official shirts’ and are often included in the momento exchanges between teams, players and captains.  You could start an Olympic - I mean, World Cup souvenir collection…there are often pins, patches, small plaques, key chains, etc. With 36-40 countries participating, you’d have ‘show& tell’ for a least a month when you go home.

But what was that?...........you’re a bit on the shy side?...You don’t meet folks easily?  Then, BE A VOLUNTEER! Someone has to put a smile on their face and say ‘Hello, here’s your Team packet’ or ‘Hi. How many is in your group for dinner?’. Someone will be asked “Where is the tournament hall? Where do the youth play?“  It could be YOU …..and the conversation starts. You have all played “host “ at one time or another to family and friends. Well, here’s to dart family and new friends! ‘You’ can be part of the World Cup experience!

How often does this World Cup come around?  Like the Olympics……not that often. USA hosted in the late 1970s and in 1993….this is 2009.  The affair is scheduled in odd years only. You may not be around the next time World Cup is held in the USA. Countries turn in bids and England has been named for 2011. There you would only be a spectator. Now’s the time…your time.

Who will know there? Who will you root for? Team USA, the HOME TEAM, consists of Stacy Bromberg of Las Vegas, NV; Marilyn Popp from Camden, DE; Ryan Barnette of Valdez, NC; Steve Brown from Cahokia, IL; Jim Widmayer of Staten Island, NY and Brian Blake from  Fayetteville, NC. (See BEN, May/June 2009 for more details.) Surely you recognize at least one of these fine darters! Our youth players will be determined by the Youth National Finals in Stamford in August.

All these players need your support.  You’ve watched the Olympics. You know how the roar of the crowd brings out the athlete’s ‘best’ performance! This World Cup is…It’s our ‘Olympic Darts in Charlotte’.  Come cheer on the HOME TEAM!  Volunteer!

WORLD CUP XVII UPDATE:
From the Prez:

World Cup XVII almost here and all of the plans are finally coming to fruition September 23, 2009 in Charlotte, North Carolina.  We are excited to announce that there are 36 countries that will be competing in Charlotte.  This event is taking shape because of the hard work and planning of a many people and the final piece of the puzzle is YOU.  We are looking for volunteers to help run the World Cup and we have positions for everyone.

The most critical job at any World Cup is that of the Match Officials.  These people are responsible for scoring each leg accurately, since statistics on every dart thrown are kept. Match Officials are also instrumental in keeping things moving in a timely manner. With 36 countries competing the scheduling is extremely important, and the Match Officials are a key component of this.

We are looking for people to set up and break down the equipment necessary for the World Cup.  Volunteers are needed for things such as merchandise sales, ticket taking, security, and hospitality for the visiting countries.  Please check out the official World Cup Website, www.worldcupdarts2009.com.  You can find all of the details there, including the packages available for World Cup volunteers, and you can view the countries that have confirmed for this prestigious extravaganza.  It promises to be an exciting time in Charlotte, and we would like to have all ADO members experience it.

Another way to be a part of the World Cup is to become a sponsor.  We have sponsorship opportunities available that are affordable for members, businesses, and clubs.  One superb way to show your support is with an advertisement in the World Cup program.  The program is a valuable source of information for World Cup attendees, as all of the schedules for the matches, as well as photos of the competitors are included in this book.  This is a great place to advertise a tournament, or just show your support for the US Team. Dartboard Sponsorships are available, and a grand opportunity is a table sponsorship for the Closing Banquet at World Cup.  You can choose the country that you would like to sponsor (first come, first served), and sit with them at the closing banquet.  All of the details on sponsorship are available on the World Cup website.  Please take a look at the website, and if you need any other information, please let me know.  See you in Charlotte!!!

—Buddy Bartoletta, ADO President

P.S.  World Cup souvenir shirts will be available at every 2009 National Finals.
